The Ancient History of the Patwa Samaj and the Mandsaur Inscription (Pattavaya Guild)
The ancient history of the Patwa community is authenticated by the 5th-century 'Mandsaur Inscription'. In ancient India, this community was known as 'Pattavaya' (silk weavers). They were not just artisans but a highly powerful, organized, and affluent mercantile guild. Having migrated from Lata (Gujarat) to Dashapura (Mandsaur), the members of this community were also skilled in martial arts, astrology, and architecture. Using their immense wealth, they constructed a magnificent 'Sun Temple' in Dashapura in 437 CE, which remains the greatest historical evidence of their glorious past and social prestige.
Detailed History (English)
- Origin of the word 'Pattavaya' In Sanskrit, 'Patt' means silk, and 'Vaya' means weaver or stringer. The modern word 'Patwa' is derived directly from this ancient term 'Pattavaya', signifying a community traditionally engaged in silk and thread artistry.
- Historical Evidence: Mandsaur (Dashapura) Inscription The 5th-century (437-473 CE) stone inscription of Mandsaur is the most authentic source for this community. It was composed by the renowned Sanskrit poet Vatsabhatti during the reign of Gupta Emperor Kumaragupta I. It remains one of the most vital documents in Indian archaeology.
- Migration from Lata Region According to the inscription, the Pattavaya community originally resided in the Lata region (South Gujarat). To expand their trade and seeking honor for their craft, this entire corporate-like guild migrated and settled in Dashapura (modern Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh).
- A Guild of Multifaceted Talents Verses 16 to 19 of the inscription clearly describe that the Pattavayas were not merely silk weavers. Among them were excellent warriors and archers, great scholars of astrology, and religious storytellers. This indicates that the community was proficient in education, scriptures, and martial arts alike.
- Construction of the Grand Sun Temple After amassing immense wealth from the silk trade, the Pattavaya guild demonstrated their philanthropy. In 437 CE (Malava Samvat 493), they funded and built a massive and magnificent 'Sun Temple' in Dashapura. Later, in 473 CE, when the temple was damaged, they repaired and restored it entirely at their own expense.
(Detailed History - Hindi)
