भारत की स्वतंत्रता का इतिहास केवल उन महान नामों तक सीमित नहीं है जिन्हें पूरा देश जानता है। इस संघर्ष में ऐसे अनेक वीर भी रहे, जिन्होंने कम उम्र में ही अंग्रेजी शासन के विरुद्ध आवाज उठाई और देश की स्वतंत्रता के लिए कठिनाइयाँ सहीं। ऐसे ही साहसी स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों में वीर जंग बहादुर पटवा जी का नाम उल्लेखनीय है।

बिहार के गया जिले में मानपुर स्थित 'पटवा टोली' पारंपरिक रूप से बुनकरों (Weavers) की बस्ती रही है। 1990 के दशक में जब पावरलूम उद्योग भयंकर मंदी और बिजली संकट की मार झेल रहा था, तब 1998 में इस बस्ती के एक साधारण बुनकर परिवार के बेटे जितेंद्र कुमार पटवा ने देश की सबसे कठिन परीक्षा आईआईटी (IIT-JEE) पास करके इतिहास रच दिया। वे पटवा टोली के पहले IITian बने। उनकी इस अभूतपूर्व सफलता ने पूरे समाज में निराशा के अंधकार को चीरकर शिक्षा की एक नई लहर पैदा कर दी। आज यह बस्ती "आईआईटीयन्स का गांव" (Village of IITians) के नाम से पूरी दुनिया में मशहूर है, जहां से अब तक 300 से अधिक युवा IIT, NIT और अन्य शीर्ष इंजीनियरिंग संस्थानों में पहुंचकर पटवा समाज का नाम रोशन कर चुके हैं। (Patwa Toli, located in Manpur, Gaya (Bihar), is traditionally a settlement of weavers. In the 1990s, when the powerloom industry was facing a severe recession, Jitendra Kumar Patwa, the son of an ordinary weaver, made history in 1998 by cracking the highly prestigious IIT-JEE. He became the first IITian from Patwa Toli. His monumental success ignited an educational revolution, changing the mindset of the entire community. Today, this locality is globally recognized as the "Village of IITians," having produced over 300 engineers from IITs, NITs, and other premier institutions, bringing immense pride to the Patwa community.)

The ancient history of the Patwa community is authenticated by the 5th-century 'Mandsaur Inscription'. In ancient India, this community was known as 'Pattavaya' (silk weavers). They were not just artisans but a highly powerful, organized, and affluent mercantile guild. Having migrated from Lata (Gujarat) to Dashapura (Mandsaur), the members of this community were also skilled in martial arts, astrology, and architecture. Using their immense wealth, they constructed a magnificent 'Sun Temple' in Dashapura in 437 CE, which remains the greatest historical evidence of their glorious past and social prestige. पटवा समाज का प्राचीन इतिहास 5वीं शताब्दी के 'मंदसौर शिलालेख' से प्रमाणित होता है। प्राचीन भारत में इस समाज को 'पट्टवाय' (रेशम बुनकर) कहा जाता था। यह समुदाय केवल कारीगर नहीं, बल्कि एक बेहद शक्तिशाली, संगठित और संपन्न व्यापारिक श्रेणी (Guild) था। लाट प्रदेश (गुजरात) से दशपुर (मंदसौर) आकर बसे इस समाज के लोग युद्ध कला, ज्योतिष और वास्तुकला में भी निपुण थे। अपनी अपार संपत्ति से इन्होंने 437 ईस्वी में दशपुर में एक भव्य 'सूर्य मंदिर' का निर्माण करवाया था, जो इनके गौरवशाली इतिहास और सामाजिक रुतबे का सबसे बड़ा ऐतिहासिक साक्ष्य है।
